Applying for Austrian citizenship - Checklist of documents

Applying for Austrian citizenship - Documents Checklist

You want to apply for Austrian citizenship but don’t know which documents are required?
Do I really need all the documents for an application?
Which documents do I need translated?

By the time you can apply for citizenship, you have already spent a lot of time and energy. It is even more annoying if the application is delayed even further because you forgot to submit a document. That is why it is important to know exactly which documents are required in order to avoid unnecessary surprises.

2 paths to citizenship

There are two ways to obtain the Austrian citizenship:

1st way: Citizenship through ancestry (father and/or mother are citizens)

2nd way: Citizenship is granted

You can find a detailed explanation of how to obtain citizenship via these two paths in our article: When can I apply for Austrian citizenship - Checklist

1st Way: What documents do I need?

1. Birth certificate
2. Registration form
3. Parents’ marriage certificate or acknowledgement of paternity/court order
4. Passport and proof of citizenship of the Austrian mother or passport and proof of citizenship of the Austrian father

Where can I submit the application?

The application for citizenship by descent (1st route) can be submitted at any registry office or at the Austrian embassy abroad.

The application for citizenship (second route) can be submitted to the settlement authority (MA35, State Government Office, etc.) or to the Austrian embassy abroad or in your home country.

Do I need to have certain documents translated?

Yes!

All Foreign language documents must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Documents from the home country (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.) require a certification or apostille from the Austrian embassy. (The authorities will tell you which ones exactly)

Dictionary: What does ... actually mean?

Extract of the criminal record:
Also known as a criminal record certificate. It provides information about the convictions recorded in a person's criminal record or that the criminal record does not contain any such conviction. You can find more detailed information here: Criminal record certificate.

Credit register extract:
A KSV entry is simply a note in the credit protection association about certain circumstances that can influence a person's ability to pay. Above all, information about loans and previous payment behavior is recorded there.

Apostille:
The apostille is a simplified form of diplomatic authentication of public documents for international legal transactions. In countries that have signed the Hague Authentication Convention, it replaces the otherwise required legalization and is the final authentication of a document in the home country.
