Guide to the Integration Contract and Module 1-who does it apply to and what needs to be done? (Part 2 of 2)


In the last article we discussed what the Integration Contract is, who it applies to you, which exemptions exist and and who the completion of Module 1 of Integration Contract encompasses.

Subsequently we will discuss Module 2 of the Integration Contract as well as the transitional provisions for Module 2.  

Module II is the second of two successive modules. In order to complete Module 2, you must first complete Module 1.

Regarding the Details fo Module 2 of the Integration Contract („indepedent speech use“)

Module II is the second of two successive modules. In order to complete Module 2, you must first complete Module 1.

The integration exam of  Module II of the Integration Contract is conducted according to a federally uniform standard. 

It serves the purpose of attaining advanced  German knowledge skills and comprises language as well as value components.

For the successful completion German language skills on Level B1 according to the Mutual European Reference Framework for languages and advanced transmission of the basic values of a legal and social order have to be ceritfied. 


Does Module 2 of the Integration Contract have to be completed? 



It all depends on what your goals are.

In contrast to Module 1, there is no general obligation to fulfill Module 2 for holders of residence permits.

However, Module 2 must be fulfilled in order to receive the residence permit "Permanent residence - EU".

It also serves as proof of sufficient knowledge of German in the procedure for the attaing Austrian citizenship.

So if you want to become a citizen, it is essential to complete Module 2.





As with Module 1, there are various options for successfully completing Module 2.
However, you should note that some of the current options will expire on June 1, 2021.

In which way can Module 2 be completed?

As with Module 1, there are various options for successfully completing Module 2.
However, you should note that some of the current options will expire on June 1, 2021.

Through submission of transcript of  the integration exam (minium language level B1) of the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF),

• Through proof the successful completion of the integration exam (minimum language level B1) of the Association Austria German Language Diploma (ÖSD); however only till 30. May 2021,

• Concerning minors the attedance of a primary school, i.e., middle school according to Austrian compulsory education.

• Through proof of a five year long attendance of mandatory school in Austria and positive completion of the subject "German".  

•  Through proof of the positive completion of the subject "German" after four years of schooling in the German language at a foreign secondary school.  

• Through the enrollment at a two year post-graduate program taught in German. 

• Through the enrollment at a two year post-graduate program (for example at a university) taught in German and academic sucess of minimum 32 ECTS- credits, or 16 semster hours. 

• Through proof of a corresponding post-graduate degree.

There a few people groups that are exempt from completing Module 2 of the Integration Contract.

Who is exempted from completing Module 2 of the Integration Contract?


The following people groups do not have to complete Module 2:

• Underage minors (so people under 14), that will still underage at time of deadline for completion.

• People, who due their mental or physical health cannot be expected to fulfill the module (verified by a report of a publich health officer).  




Transitional provisions for Module 2 of the Integration Contract

In the first part of the article series we already discussed, the Integration Contract applies to people, that have received a visa since 01. October 2017.

Module 2 of the Integration Contract 2017 has to be completed by all people that have applied for a permanent residence permit EU since 01. October 2017.

For people that have applied for "permanent resident EU" or for the awarding of the Austrian citizenship before O1. October 2017, the provisions valid at the time of submission apply. This means that previous provisions apply.
